Riyad Mahrez’s goal in the second half gave Manchester City a 1-0 victory over Chelsea, leaving the Blues unhappy.
Welcome to live coverage of Graham Potter’s press conference following Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this evening.
Chelsea wanted to put on a great display against the Premier League champions after the poor showing against Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day. With Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic limping off with injuries in the first period, they were most certainly not helped in that endeavour.
Carney Chukwuemeka cut inside on his right foot and sent a low shot toward the corner for Chelsea, who were, nonetheless, the superior team during the first 45 minutes of play. The teenage midfielder saw his shot clear after rebounding off the post.
Naturally, Man City picked up the pace after the break and dominated the first part of the second. They ultimately found a way to score thanks to two substitutes: Riyad Mahrez’s easy finish came after Jack Grealish’s low cross was touched by the winger at the back post.
Potter even introduced inexperienced players Lewis Hall and Omari Hutchinson from the bench in the hopes of finding a way through as Chelsea continued to push and look for an equaliser. After 17 games, Chelsea is ranked tenth in the Premier League after it didn’t show up.
Adam Newson, our chief Chelsea correspondent, is stationed at Stamford Bridge to obtain Potter’s entire post-game response. Live updates are displayed below.
Kepa could do better on that ball.
Auba is finished.
The positive in the game is Chuckumweka. What a player! What a future!
Lewis Hall will be a baller.
At least we kept Haaland out of the goal posts.
