According to rumors, if his contract extension negotiations with the west London club go down in the coming weeks, Chelsea’s Jorginho would be open to a return to Napoli.
The Italian’s current contract is set to end in the summer, and given that the club is planning to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, he may depart Stamford Bridge the following year.
A return to Italy appears to be the midfielder’s first option, should Chelsea decide not to extend his contract, according to his agent, who has already begun looking into the midfielder’s alternatives.
According to Sky Italy, Chelsea is open to talking with the midfielder about extending their contract, and only a call from Napoli would cause the player to rethink his options.
The winner of Euro 2020 is eligible to leave London in June 2023 and wants to finish his career with Naples, the team from which the Blues acquired him in 2018.
The player would formally request his entourage to try to reach a deal with the Italian side if his negotiations with Chelsea failed.
The exorbitant salary Jorginho boasts in his Chelsea contract, however, complicates a potential return given Napoli’s present financial difficulties.
Jorginho will need to stretch out his money over a long deal if he truly wants to return to Italy since his €6 million (£5.3 million) salary is too much for Aurelio De Laurentiis’ Napoli.
A long-term contract, however, is unlikely to be extended to the veteran, and the Chelsea star’s return could only be arranged by accepting a 50% pay drop.
The exits of Lorenzo Insigne, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Dries Mertens show how Napoli’s financial accounts are prioritised over team selections despite the club’s continued severe budgetary restrictions.
In the event that Chelsea leaves, Jorginho would want to return to Napoli, but there are still a few other options for the midfielder to return to Italy.
The Italian midfielder’s longtime admirer Maurizio Sarri, who joined Chelsea on the same day as him, would be happy to have the 31-year-old join Lazio.
The player’s agents have been under pressure from Newcastle and Barcelona for a while now, but the discussion with Napoli has remained a top priority.
In addition to financial limitations, Stanislav Lobotka’s performances in the Italian team’s midfield may prevent Jorginho from returning to Napoli.
The midfielder, whose contract was extended through 2027, has played in almost all of their home games and assisted them in reaching the top of the Serie A standings.
