When Martinez and Lukaku were both at Inter Milan, they were a force to be reckoned with. 19 goals were scored with one aiding the other in 78 games when both were on the pitch together in all competitions. Lukaku scored ten goals with Martinez’s help, while Martinez scored nine goals on his own.
Under now-Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, the pair were outstanding in Inter’s title-winning 2020/21 season. That team, however, was ripped apart just months later due to financial troubles, with Conte leaving and Lukaku being bought by Chelsea for around £100 million, while Achraf Hakimi was linked with a transfer to Stamford Bridge.
Lukaku’s life in west London, on the other hand, has not gone as he had planned. The Belgium international has only struck the back of the net five times in the Premier League since his return to Chelsea, the most recent of which came at the end of December.
It’s not as if he hasn’t been given chances under Thomas Tuchel, but Lukaku has failed to take advantage of them recently. Chelsea were trounced 1-0 away at Everton over the weekend, and the £97.5 million club-record acquisition was an unused replacement.
Lukaku is inevitably being linked with a transfer away from Chelsea after his second stay with the club has failed to impress. However, new rumours say that the striker is ready to reject offers from AC Milan and Newcastle United, both of which are thought to be interested.
Chelsea would be unable to recuperate the whole £97.5 million they paid for him last summer, leaving them with just two options: sell him and cut their losses, or give him another season at Stamford Bridge in the aim of getting the most out of him.
Also, bringing in someone who has demonstrated in the past that he can get the best out of Lukaku would be a good idea. Martinez, Lautaro Of course, signing the Argentine isn’t exclusively for the purpose of getting the best out of Lukaku, as he is a gifted player in his own right.
Inter are now prepared to sell the 24-year-old forward for £70 million if a bid of that size comes in this summer, according to The Times via the Express. Martinez extended his contract at the San Siro last year, although he may still depart at the conclusion of the season.
Martinez has been in superb form for Inter this season, scoring 21 goals in all competitions, 17 of which have come in the Italian league. Martinez has nearly doubled the predicted goals of Chelsea’s leading scorer Kai Havertz this season (Martinez: 16.1 – Havertz: 8.4).
