The two Premier League champions have been mentioned in trade rumors throughout the summer as the Blues appeared to be in need of a complete defensive overhaul after the exits of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
The signing of the defensive players Thomas Tuchel was after looks to have been a prerequisite for the deals.
The Blues have signed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, but they haven’t yet reached the caliber of the three rumored additions the German is seeking.
Azpilicueta and Alonso’s sale is blocked by Chelsea
Barcelona may be to fault for this, as Sport reports that the club refused to transfer either Azpilicueta or Alonso to them after they hijacked a deal to buy Jules Kounde.
After having a contract for his transfer to Stamford Bridge fall through more than a year ago, the Frenchman appeared to be nearing completion of the transaction.
Barcelona has been able to pursue the move, and it is now believed that they have reached an agreement with the player on personal terms.
Although they did not upgrade on the pair as they had intended to have at this point in the window, it is now clear that they must keep the seasoned team in order to have depth at the back.
Reece James and Ben Chilwell, the team’s two starting fullbacks, both need protection, especially since they both had injuries that kept them out of action at various stages of the previous season.
If he remains, Azpilicueta may also be used as a center-back because the present squad lacks the depth to function without him.
