When Chelsea looked to bolster our defense last summer, the French defender—who has a £68 million release clause—was a priority target for the Blues.
Todd Boehly’s arrival, however, caused Chelsea to shift its focus to other defensive targets like Nathan Ake and Matthijs de Ligt of Juventus.
However, because of the impasse over Ake between the Blues and Manchester City and De Ligt’s eagerness to go with Bayern Munich, Chelsea moved fast to outbid Barcelona for the France defender.
Chelsea was unable to recruit Kounde last summer because they declined to match Sevilla’s £68 million release clause.
Kounde is now expected to sign with Chelsea this week, with one stark exception.
