Chelsea owners send strong warning to Enzo Maresca after ‘worst performance’ against Brighton
Confidence in Maresca Amid Chelsea’s Worst Performance
Despite Chelsea’s recent slump, culminating in what Enzo Maresca himself described as their ‘worst performance of the season’ against Brighton, the club’s owners remain confident in his leadership. Reports suggest they are ‘happy’ with the progress made under the Italian manager, despite the recent setbacks.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Just two months ago, Chelsea had the chance to leapfrog Liverpool at the top of the Premier League with a win over Everton. However, a goalless draw that day marked the beginning of a downturn in form. Since then, Chelsea have won only three of their last eight league games, slipping to sixth place, one point outside the Champions League spots.
Setbacks Against Brighton Raise Concerns
Chelsea’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton last weekend was followed by another disappointing loss to the Seagulls in the Premier League. Brighton, a club that has sold several key players to Chelsea in recent years, dominated the match, leading 2-0 at halftime with goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh. Minteh added a third after the break, sealing Chelsea’s fate.
“Probably since I arrived that is the worst performance, especially in the moment we are in,” Maresca admitted post-match.
“We are fourth in the league and winning tonight you can go one point from third and make the gap to the rest bigger. The performance is not one you want to offer, so we are very upset and sorry for the fans that were here.
“This is the worst moment since I arrived but we are still there and we need to finish in the best way.”
Chelsea fans expressed their frustration, chanting for former owner Roman Abramovich before many exited the stadium early as Brighton secured their victory.
Maresca’s Job Remains Secure—for Now
With Chelsea’s dip in form, speculation has arisen regarding Maresca’s future at Stamford Bridge. However, The Athletic reports that the club’s board remains satisfied with his progress and views the team as ahead of schedule. Maresca was reportedly informed that Champions League qualification was not an immediate requirement, with expectations set for the following season.
While Chelsea have dropped to sixth place, they have spent most of the campaign within the top four and remain just one point behind Manchester City. Additionally, there is an understanding that injuries to key players, including Nicolas Jackson, Romeo Lavia, and Wesley Fofana, have made Maresca’s task more challenging.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has also reinforced the club’s stance, stating that Chelsea’s hierarchy remains ‘convinced’ that Maresca is the right man to lead the team forward. The club intends to support him in his efforts to return Chelsea to the top of English football.
