When you think of Chelsea’s legendary midfielders, Frank Lampard is the first name that comes to mind. However, the club has been lucky enough to boast an array of standout talents, including N’Golo Kanté, Ruud Gullit, Michael Essien, and Dennis Wise.
Among these stars, Ramires, the Brazilian midfielder, left a lasting impact with his high-energy performances between 2010 and 2016. His dynamic style of play and relentless work rate made him an immediate fan favorite. In 2021, Ramires even compared his own style to that of Chelsea legend Kanté, known for his tireless efforts in the midfield.
A Moment Chelsea Fans Will Never Forget
Ramires has often shared that one particular moment from his career is always mentioned when he meets Chelsea fans today. That unforgettable goal in the 2012 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona remains a fan favorite, and for many, it is the moment they associate with his time at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Ramires recalled how fans still approach him, saying, “Oh! Your goal against Barcelona!” He explained, “Whenever I run into a Chelsea fan, they always bring up that goal. It was such a significant moment in that campaign.”
Recalling the lead-up to the goal, Ramires shared that David Luiz had suggested he chip the goalkeeper if given the chance. He initially struggled in training, but when the opportunity arose in the game, he knew exactly what to do. With a perfectly timed pass from Frank Lampard, Ramires chipped the ball over Barcelona’s goalkeeper, Víctor Valdés, to give Chelsea a crucial away goal in a 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou.
“I saw Valdés coming, and if I shot to the side, he might save it,” Ramires said. “So I thought the only option was to chip it, and when the ball dropped, I just ran to see if it went in. It was such an incredible moment for me.”
This goal, combined with Chelsea’s valiant performance, helped secure their place in the Champions League final. What followed was one of the greatest upsets in football history: Chelsea’s victory over Bayern Munich in the final, which earned the club its first-ever European crown.
Moisés Caicedo: A Rising Star in the Mold of Ramires?
Looking at Chelsea’s current midfield, you can see certain similarities between Moisés Caicedo and Ramires, particularly in the way they cover vast amounts of ground. Caicedo has been one of the standout midfielders in the world this season, showcasing impressive performances week in and week out.
While Caicedo is still in the early stages of his Chelsea career, there is potential for him to develop into a player who can contribute goals and assists—just like Ramires did during his time at the club. If he can add that element to his game, he could take his performances to the next level.
In Chelsea’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton, Caicedo was widely regarded as the team’s best player. His consistently eye-catching displays this season have only heightened expectations.
Having joined Chelsea for a massive £115 million just 18 months ago, Caicedo is beginning to show why the club made such a significant investment in him. The question now is whether he can replicate the success of his predecessors by helping the team secure silverware and delivering in the biggest matches.
