Enzo Maresca Blames Robert Sanchez After 3-1 Defeat to Man City
Chelsea’s struggles continued with a 3-1 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, despite taking an early lead through Noni Madueke. While the defeat reflected a collective underperformance, head coach Enzo Maresca has publicly called out goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for a critical mistake that significantly impacted the match.
Sanchez’s Costly Error
Sanchez’s error came in a pivotal moment when he attempted to challenge a long ball over Chelsea’s defensive line but hesitated and retreated. This indecision gave Erling Haaland the perfect opportunity to chip the goalkeeper from distance, swinging the momentum firmly in Manchester City’s favor.
The misstep capped a difficult evening for Sanchez, who faced boos from Chelsea fans frustrated with his recent string of costly mistakes. His positioning during Haaland’s goal turned a low-probability chance worth 0.03(xG) into a much more dangerous 0.42(xG) opportunity.
Maresca Admits Frustration
Speaking to the press after the game, Maresca, who has previously defended Sanchez, acknowledged the goalkeeper’s repeated errors and suggested that change might be on the horizon.
“Robert is the first to admit he knows he has to do better,” Maresca said. “He’s working hard every day. We try to have conversations with all of them, and we are making progress. We are better than one or two months ago. These moments will make us better.”
While reaffirming his trust in Sanchez, Maresca also issued a warning:
“We trust Robert for sure, but in the same moment, he is aware that he is making too many mistakes. He needs to step up or get replaced.”
Growing Pressure on Sanchez
Sanchez’s inconsistent performances have become a recurring issue for Chelsea, contributing to their struggles in maintaining clean sheets and securing crucial points. While Maresca has shown patience, the goalkeeper’s position appears increasingly under threat, with potential replacements like Filip Jorgensen or Tosin Adarabioyo waiting in the wings.
As Chelsea continues to search for solutions to their defensive woes, the team faces mounting pressure to turn their season around. With their next match against West Ham approaching, all eyes will be on Maresca’s lineup and whether he decides to shake things up in goal.
