Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has expressed his concerns about Nicolas Jackson’s ability to lead the Blues to success. Reflecting on Chelsea’s struggles, Mikel believes that the striker’s lack of consistent goalscoring is the main reason the team has fallen short of competing for top honors.
Mikel’s Chelsea Legacy
Mikel knows what it takes to win at Stamford Bridge. Spending 11 years with the club between 2006 and 2017, he was a key figure during Chelsea’s golden era. The Nigerian international made 372 appearances and helped secure 11 major trophies, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League victory.
But times have changed. Chelsea hasn’t been close to lifting the Premier League trophy since 2017, and the team has endured turbulent seasons amidst major squad overhauls. While there are signs of progress under manager Enzo Maresca, Mikel insists that Chelsea isn’t yet ready to compete for silverware—and he points the finger at Jackson.
Jackson’s Struggles in Front of Goal
Speaking on his podcast, the Obi One Podcast, Mikel criticized Jackson’s lack of clinical finishing, claiming it’s costing Chelsea dearly in their pursuit of trophies.
“We are not clinical enough; he is not scoring enough goals,” Mikel said. “He gets into the right positions but doesn’t finish. He’s not the kind of striker who can lead us to the top four or win the Premier League title.”
Mikel compared Jackson unfavorably to other top strikers like Alexander Isak at Newcastle, suggesting that Chelsea needs a proven goalscorer to succeed.
“One goal in six games is not good enough. If we had Victor Osimhen or Viktor Gyökeres, we’d still be in the title race,” he added.
The Striker Void Post-Drogba
Chelsea has struggled to replace their legendary striker Didier Drogba since his departure in 2012. While Diego Costa briefly filled the void, his tenure ended too soon. Now, Mikel believes Jackson isn’t the long-term solution either, despite the 26 goals he’s scored in 64 appearances for the club.
This isn’t the first time Mikel has voiced concerns about Jackson’s performances. He has repeatedly emphasized that Chelsea needs a more reliable forward to return to their winning ways.
What’s Next for Chelsea?
With the Premier League title slipping further out of reach, Chelsea faces a critical decision. If they are to challenge for trophies again, addressing their attacking struggles and finding a dependable striker will be key. As Mikel highlighted, the ability to convert chances into goals is the missing link that separates Chelsea from being contenders once more.
