SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) — Alex, a former Brazil defender, revealed on Friday that he underwent heart bypass surgery earlier this week. After a lengthy and successful career playing for Chelsea, PSV Eindhoven, Paris Saint-Germain, and AC Milan, the 39-year-old retired from the sport in 2016.

“I came here to refute claims that I had suffered a heart attack. I discovered a (health) issue a few days ago, and physicians chose to do bypass surgery on me. Alex explained, “I had four clogged arteries.” “I just got out of the intensive care unit, and I’ll be here for another six days.”
In Brazil, the Netherlands, England, and France, Alex won national club titles. With the Brazilian national team, he also won the 2007 Copa America and the 2012 Champions League with Chelsea.
