Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford underscored the challenges new manager Ruben Amorim faces as he tries to rebuild the team. Despite optimism following his recent appointment, United’s performance was a mixed bag, with moments of promise overshadowed by lackluster execution. United briefly led after Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty won by Rasmus Hojlund, but Moises Caicedo’s superb equalizer soon afterward dampened hopes for a victory. Here’s a breakdown of United’s player performances:
Andre Onana – 6
Onana had little to do until Caicedo’s volley flew into the bottom corner, leaving him with no chance to save it. However, he nearly cost United with a risky short pass to Casemiro in the first half, adding unnecessary pressure.
Diogo Dalot – 6
Dalot earned an early yellow card for a reckless tackle on Pedro Neto but showed improvement afterward, managing to contain the winger. His defensive efforts kept Chelsea’s threats down his side in check.
Matthijs de Ligt – 6
A reliable presence at the back, De Ligt managed Chelsea’s forwards effectively. Although he briefly lost his footing during one attack, he was spared as Enzo Fernandez missed his shot.
Lisandro Martinez – 5
Martinez’s performance was far from his best. Still regaining form after his knee injury, he looked uneasy on the ball and struggled with positioning, often leaving gaps for Chelsea’s attackers. He was also fortunate to avoid a red card in stoppage time for a challenge on Cole Palmer.
Noussair Mazraoui – 6
Mazraoui, played out of his usual position, showed determination and linked up well with the midfield. However, he was occasionally left exposed as Chelsea increased their attacking pressure late in the game.
Casemiro – 5
A performance that raises questions about Casemiro’s future role in the squad. Though still technically skilled, he couldn’t match Chelsea’s younger midfielders, particularly Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. A yellow card late in the game reflected his mounting frustration.
Manuel Ugarte – 6
Ugarte had moments of quality, notably with a brilliant crossfield ball to Marcus Rashford, but was inconsistent in possession. He earned a booking for pulling down Cole Palmer after being beaten, showing both his aggressive style and his need for more discipline.
Alejandro Garnacho – 3
Garnacho struggled significantly. His early shot was easily saved by Sanchez, and he later missed another chance with the goal open. Sloppy passing and poor decision-making marred his performance, a far cry from his strong form last season.
Bruno Fernandes – 7
Fernandes was once again a standout figure for United. He confidently converted his penalty and led by example as others faltered around him. Though he missed a late chance, his energy and commitment were evident throughout.
Marcus Rashford – 5
Rashford’s difficult season continued. He struck the post with a volley late in the first half, but his lack of confidence was evident in his technique and decision-making. He was subbed off after a subdued outing, and his form remains a pressing concern.
Rasmus Hojlund – 6
Hojlund had minimal involvement in the box but made his one touch count by winning the penalty. He showcased good control in that moment but desperately needs better service from United’s midfield.
Substitutes
- Amad Diallo (for Rashford, ’72) – 5
Amad found it hard to influence the game after coming on and struggled to make a real impact. - Joshua Zirkzee (for Hojlund, ’83) – 5
Zirkzee had a quick chance to break through on goal but hesitated, squandering the opportunity. - Victor Lindelof (for Ugarte, ’83) – 5
Lindelof came on in a midfield role but failed to make a noticeable contribution in the game’s final moments.
United’s performance highlighted areas needing improvement, with Fernandes and Hojlund providing the few bright spots. As Amorim takes stock, he faces a challenging path ahead in building consistency and resilience within this squad.
