Enzo Maresca puzzled many Chelsea fans during the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle by deploying Malo Gusto in the unconventional no.10 role. Explaining the decision, Maresca said, “With Malo in that position, we think he can create and trouble the opposition. He’s been fantastic so far.”
He continued, “[Malo] is helping us in various roles—whether as a holding midfielder, operating in the pocket, or even as a central defender for parts of the game. He’s adapting well and will continue in this role.”
Unfortunately, the tactical move didn’t yield the desired results, as Chelsea struggled to find the net. They’ll be looking to bounce back on Sunday, 3 November, in their Premier League showdown against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Maresca’s Reasoning: “Physicality and Strength in the Middle”
In another decision, Maresca explained why he often favors Lavia over Fernandez in central midfield, citing Lavia’s physicality and presence as crucial qualities.
