Smooth Transition to European Competition
As Chelsea shifted gears from Premier League action to the Conference League, they made their usual lineup changes, introducing 11 new faces to the starting XI. However, this rotation didn’t hinder their performance; the Blues secured a convincing 4-1 victory against Panathinaikos, topping their European group.
Attackers Shine in Dominant Performance
The Chelsea attackers once again stole the spotlight, with all four forwards making significant contributions to the scoreline. Mykhailo Mudryk particularly impressed the fans with his performance, while Joao Felix showcased his quality with another standout display.
A New Defensive Lineup
The match also featured a revamped back four, including Renato Veiga, who played as a center-back for the first time, and Axel Disasi stationed on the right side of defense. Enzo Maresca expressed his delight at Veiga’s performance in an unfamiliar position, suggesting he might have a promising future in central defense.
Concerns for Axel Disasi’s Future
This new arrangement poses challenges for Disasi’s future at Chelsea. The club currently boasts strong options at right-back, with Reece James and Malo Gusto set to return to full fitness soon. Although they didn’t travel to Greece, they will enter a fierce competition for minutes in the upcoming weeks.
Given this depth, Disasi may find it challenging to secure regular playing time at right-back this season. His earlier performance against Bournemouth failed to impress, placing him behind both James and Gusto in the selection hierarchy.
Additionally, if Chelsea can resolve the contract situation with Josh Acheampong, Disasi could find himself further down the pecking order. With limited opportunities on the horizon, the £39 million signing from over a year ago may be viewed as surplus to requirements at this point.
