Nicolas Jackson gave Chelsea a dream start in their London derby against West Ham United earlier today, scoring just four minutes into the match with a composed finish past goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. The 23-year-old striker didn’t stop there, as he added a second goal later on, marking his fourth Premier League goal of the season.
This brace also allowed Jackson to surpass former Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud’s Premier League goal tally. Giroud, who played for Chelsea between 2018 and 2021, managed to score 17 goals in 75 Premier League appearances. Remarkably, Jackson reached 18 goals in 36 fewer games, highlighting his quick adaptation and effectiveness as Chelsea’s leading striker.
Before the game, former Chelsea player John Obi Mikel had emphasized the importance of Jackson improving his finishing. It seems Jackson took that advice to heart, delivering a clinical performance against West Ham.
Jackson’s Competition and Potential
With Christopher Nkunku also in fine form after scoring the winner against Bournemouth last weekend, Jackson finds himself competing with a top-quality teammate. Chelsea’s summer interest in Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen further underlined their desire for firepower up front, though they failed to land him.
Jackson’s form suggests Chelsea might not need to make another signing if he continues scoring. Last season, Jackson netted 14 goals in the Premier League, and with four goals already this campaign after just five games, a 20-goal target seems well within reach if Enzo Maresca keeps him as a regular starter. His potential to score across all competitions also looks promising given the creative support from teammates like Jadon Sancho, Cole Palmer, and Noni Madueke.
While Chelsea are still scouting players like Viktor Gyökeres, Jackson’s performances might make the need for a new center-forward less urgent. If he maintains this level, he could become the club’s undisputed main man up front for the season.
