In 2022, Chelsea Football Club found itself with a new owner. Todd Boehly, an American businessman, took over from Roman Abramovich after the Russian was forced to sell the club. Boehly’s purchase, worth £4.25 billion, came at the end of the 2021/22 season, and since then, he has poured in more than £1.2 billion in an attempt to return Chelsea to Premier League glory.
Despite the heavy spending and multiple managerial changes, success has eluded the Blues. Boehly’s latest managerial appointment, Enzo Maresca, brought in from Leicester City, has been tasked with the challenge of ending the club’s eight-year wait for a Premier League title. One player that Maresca could lean on to break the drought is the talented Cole Palmer, whose value has skyrocketed thanks to his incredible performances at Stamford Bridge.
Cole Palmer’s Early Market Value
When Boehly took over in May 2022, Cole Palmer was still at Manchester City. Despite being part of Pep Guardiola’s squad, he was primarily used as a bench player, making only 11 appearances in the 2021/22 season. He did manage to score his first Champions League goal against Club Brugge, but it wasn’t enough to cement a regular place in City’s star-studded lineup.
At that time, Palmer’s market value was modest—around £5 million according to Transfermarkt, largely due to his limited first-team minutes.
Palmer’s Market Value in 2022/23
During the 2022/23 season, Palmer saw more game time under Guardiola, featuring in 25 matches. However, like in the previous season, he was mostly used as a substitute, clocking just 358 minutes of Premier League action. He contributed one assist during City’s title-winning campaign.
Thanks to the slight increase in his minutes, Palmer’s market value climbed to £12.6 million by the end of the 2022/23 season. His time in Manchester, though, was about to come to an end as he made a big move south to London.
Palmer’s Move to Chelsea and Value in 2023/24
In a somewhat surprising move, Palmer agreed to join Chelsea in September 2023 for a fee of £40 million. Given his limited time in Manchester’s first team, many eyebrows were raised at the size of the transfer. However, the move turned out to be a stroke of genius for both player and club.
During his first season at Chelsea, Palmer made 45 appearances in all competitions, racking up an astonishing 40 goal contributions, with 33 of those coming in the Premier League. He finished the season as the league’s top combined scorer and assister, proving that he was worth every penny of his hefty transfer fee.
By the end of the 2023/24 campaign, Palmer’s market value soared to £46.4 million, an 840% increase from his valuation when Boehly took control of Chelsea.
Palmer’s Explosive Growth in 2024/25
The momentum didn’t stop there. Palmer continued his fantastic form into the 2024/25 season under new manager Maresca. In just three matches, the 22-year-old English international, described as “special” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, had already registered one goal and four assists. Four of those contributions came during Chelsea’s 6-2 thrashing of Wolves.
With his electrifying start to the season, Palmer’s market value surged again, reaching a massive £67.5 million. That marks an astonishing 1,250% rise since Boehly took over the club in May 2022.
While some may have questioned the £40 million price tag when Palmer made the switch from Manchester to London, the young winger has more than justified it. With his incredible ability in the final third, Palmer has the potential to help Chelsea end their Premier League title drought, giving Maresca the firepower he needs to bring success back to Stamford Bridge.
