Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, shared his thoughts following the team’s 2-1 defeat to Servette in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League play-off.
After a strong 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in the first leg, Chelsea seemed poised to continue their dominance. Christopher Nkunku even gave the Blues an early lead in Switzerland, but the match ended in disappointment as they lost 2-1.
Despite the setback, Chelsea secured a spot in the group stage with a 3-2 aggregate win.
Maresca’s Post-Match Reflections
Speaking to the club’s media after the match, Maresca reflected on the performance: “In the first thirty minutes, we scored and created three or four more chances. If we had managed to score again, the tie would have been over, given our 2-0 lead from the first leg.
“But then we conceded, and from that point, it’s normal to struggle a bit. I was really concerned about this game because these types of matches can be tricky.
“For Servette, this could have been their match of the season. The pitch conditions weren’t great, and with the temperature at 30°C, I had serious concerns about how the game would unfold.
“In games like this, there’s so much to lose and not much to gain. That’s why I was so anxious before the match. However, the way we started, particularly in the first half-hour, was fantastic. Our possession was excellent. But once we conceded, things became much more challenging.”
Maresca’s comments reflect the fine margins that can turn a game, especially in the unpredictable conditions they faced in Switzerland.
