Sterling’s Dilemma at Chelsea
Raheem Sterling finds himself in a precarious position as the transfer window nears its end. After being left out of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Manchester City and facing some harsh words from his manager, Sterling’s future with the club is now in serious doubt.
This surprising exclusion led to a statement from Sterling’s camp, and now Juventus is reportedly eyeing the England international for a potential transfer.
Souness Weighs in on Sterling’s Prospects
According to football pundit Graeme Souness, Sterling’s options are limited if he decides to leave Chelsea. Souness is skeptical about the possibility of Sterling securing a transfer to another Premier League club, suggesting that the winger might need to consider moving abroad to continue his career.
Where Could Sterling Land?
Sterling’s 2023/24 season was far from impressive, with just eight goals in 31 Premier League appearances. This, combined with his hefty wage of £325,000-a-week, as reported by Spotrac, significantly narrows his options.
Souness believes that Saudi Arabia might be the only viable destination for Sterling. Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Liverpool star said, “Where is the market for Raheem Sterling? Saudi Arabia, end of. And the kind of money he would want, he’s not going to get that again in England. The kind of transfer fee Chelsea would want, I don’t think there’s going to be anyone in England.”
Chelsea’s Crowded Wings
Sterling’s struggle for playing time at Chelsea is further complicated by the club’s abundance of talent on the wings. In the recent 2-0 loss to Manchester City, Christopher Nkunku started on the left, with Pedro Neto replacing him in the second half. Chelsea also boasts Mykhailo Mudryk on the left, while Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke have been regulars on the right. The addition of Joao Felix to the squad only deepens the competition for Sterling.
Though some suggest that Felix could be deployed in midfield, this wouldn’t necessarily open up a spot for Sterling in Enzo Maresca’s plans.
A Difficult Decision Ahead
For Raheem Sterling, the best course of action might be a move away from Chelsea. However, as Souness pointed out, his options are limited, and a transfer abroad, potentially to Saudi Arabia, may be the most realistic path forward for the England winger at this time.
