Chelsea is once again navigating a hectic transfer window, having signed nine players this summer with Joao Felix likely to become the tenth. Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over the club in 2022, Chelsea has spent an astonishing £1.5 billion on transfers, leading to a heavily bloated first-team squad. This situation has even influenced manager Enzo Maresca’s decisions, such as leaving Raheem Sterling out of the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, partly due to the sheer number of players at his disposal.
Despite offloading 10 players this summer, Chelsea still has over 40 first-team squad members, with 15 of them not currently training with the main group. As the transfer window deadline of August 30 approaches, the club is working to reduce the size of the squad, including the possible departure of a player who has never played a single minute for Chelsea.
Nineteen-year-old Brazilian winger Angelo Gabriel, who joined Chelsea from Santos last summer for £13 million, has reportedly agreed personal terms with Turkish club Besiktas. Although Chelsea signed the teenager to a six-year contract valid until 2029, he was immediately loaned out to French side Strasbourg, also owned by BlueCo, the consortium that purchased Chelsea.
During his loan spell in France, Angelo made 25 appearances, providing four assists. He was part of Chelsea’s pre-season squad that traveled to the United States for matches against teams like Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, Manchester City, and Real Madrid. However, the club does not see him as part of their plans for this season under Maresca.
While Angelo has agreed to the move, Chelsea and Besiktas are still negotiating the terms of the transfer. Chelsea is keen to offload players who are unlikely to feature this season, so the discussions are expected to continue.
