Aston Villa Eye Romelu Lukaku Transfer, But Belgian Star Focuses on Napoli Move
Aston Villa are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Romelu Lukaku from Premier League rivals Chelsea.
With Lukaku currently out of Chelsea’s first-team plans, the club has made it clear that the striker is up for sale. However, tensions are beginning to rise between Lukaku and the club, as he waits for a potential move to Napoli, the reigning Serie A champions.
Despite Chelsea’s desire to offload the 31-year-old striker, Napoli has yet to make a satisfactory offer, leaving Lukaku in limbo at the Cobham training ground.
Lukaku Not Interested in Villa Switch
Although Aston Villa has shown interest in securing Lukaku’s services, the Belgian striker has made it clear that he has no intention of joining the Midlands club this summer.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Lukaku has repeatedly rejected Villa’s advances, making it known that his heart is set on a move to Napoli. There’s been speculation that Lukaku has been in contact with former manager Antonio Conte, and it appears the two have exchanged messages regarding a potential reunion in Italy. The ball is now in Napoli’s court to work out a deal with Chelsea.
The Pressure to Offload Lukaku’s Wages
Chelsea is eager to move Lukaku off their payroll before the transfer window closes. With the striker earning a staggering £325,000 per week—matching Raheem Sterling as the club’s top earner—the Blues are desperate to cut ties.
Lukaku’s high wages are a burden for Chelsea, especially since he hasn’t contributed anything significant over the last two seasons. While Sterling’s performances have been inconsistent since his arrival from Manchester City in 2022, scoring only eight Premier League goals last season and six the year before, Lukaku’s absence has been even more glaring. Chelsea’s priority is to part ways with the Belgian striker and relieve the financial strain of his hefty wages.
