Chelsea’s Big Moves: Players on the Market and Potential Signings
Summer Departures
Chelsea has been actively reshuffling their squad this summer, parting ways with key players such as Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Lewis Hall, Omari Hutchinson, and Ian Maatsen. These departures have brought in about £84 million, significantly aiding the club’s financial balance. Despite these gains, Chelsea remains £21 million in the red when considering their net spend, having invested approximately £105 million in new talents like Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and young Brazilian star Estevao Willian.
Pursuing New Talent
Chelsea is eager to reinforce their squad to support Maresca’s vision. They are particularly interested in Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna. The 22-year-old Italian has been outstanding at both international and Serie A levels, with a price tag of around £42 million. To secure Calafiori and other high-profile targets, Chelsea needs to generate additional funds through player sales.
Potential Exits
Several players are rumored to be on Chelsea’s exit list, including Armando Broja, Malang Sarr, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Conor Gallagher. Not all these players will necessarily leave, but some could help boost the club’s transfer budget. Romelu Lukaku stands out as a primary candidate for departure. Since his £98 million return to Chelsea three years ago, Lukaku has struggled, spending the last two seasons on loan at Roma and Inter Milan. With a hefty weekly wage of £325,000, club owner Todd Boehly is keen to offload Lukaku. AC Milan has shown interest, initiating talks to sign the Belgian striker.
Negotiations with AC Milan
Recent negotiations between Chelsea and AC Milan have intensified. According to HITC, Chelsea has proposed four players—Broja, Chukwuemeka, Ugochukwu, and Chalobah—as part of the deal to offload Lukaku. While these players have seen limited first-team action, Chalobah has been an exception, starting 10 of Chelsea’s last 14 Premier League matches under Mauricio Pochettino last season after recovering from a thigh injury that sidelined him for most of the 2023/2024 season.
