It appears unlikely that Chelsea will sign more than one center-forward for new manager Enzo Maresca this summer. The club announced Maresca’s appointment on Monday, and one area he might look to strengthen is the forward line.
Current Striker Situation at Chelsea
Last season, Chelsea ended with Nicolas Jackson as the only recognized No.9 in the squad. The club has been linked with strikers like Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. Journalist Simon Phillips recently mentioned that Chelsea is confident in their chances of signing Sesko this summer.
Chelsea’s Shift in Transfer Focus
Right now, Chelsea’s attention seems to be on securing Sesko. Their interest in Osimhen has waned, with The Athletic reporting that they have ruled out a summer move for the 25-year-old. One reason cited is that Osimhen doesn’t fit Maresca’s system.
Given this shift, Chelsea is likely to either sign another center-forward like Sesko or none at all. Osimhen had an impressive season with 32 appearances and 17 goals, the same number Jackson scored for Chelsea, although Osimhen played fewer games.
Sesko: A Strong Alternative to Osimhen
For many Chelsea fans, Osimhen might have been the ideal choice. His goal tally at Napoli was commendable, especially with 31 goals the previous season. “Over the last couple of seasons, he’s really made that move into a world-class striker,” AS Monaco’s Folarin Balogun told ESPN last year.
However, as an alternative, Benjamin Sesko is a promising option. The Slovenian international scored 14 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches this season. Standing at 6ft 5in, he seems well-suited for the Premier League, and at only 21 years old, he has plenty of potential for growth.
Conclusion: Prioritizing Sesko
If Chelsea has indeed cooled their interest in Osimhen, Sesko should now be their priority. His attributes and potential make him an excellent candidate to bolster Chelsea’s attacking options under Maresca’s management.
