“His career his over, we have the new hero” – Jamie Carragher suggests £110k-a-week player’s Chelsea career is over after Man City draw
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! In a fiercely contested match yesterday, Chelsea managed to secure a valuable point against Manchester City, ending the encounter with a 1-1 draw against the reigning Premier League champions.
Despite the absence of the seasoned Thiago Silva, Chelsea’s defense exhibited exceptional resilience, earning praise from football pundit Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports. Carragher expressed the view that it might be time for the club to gracefully move on from Silva, who was unavailable due to injury.
With Silva approaching 40 and his contract set to expire at the end of the season, speculations are rife about the possibility of him not returning to the squad. Mauricio Pochettino opted for a central defensive pairing of Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill in Silva’s absence, a decision that proved effective in thwarting City’s attacks.
Disasi and Colwill both delivered solid performances, with Disasi making an impressive 16 clearances and Colwill contributing with 10, according to WhoScored.
Carragher, analyzing the situation, expressed skepticism about Silva regaining his spot in the starting lineup. He remarked, “When you see those two [Disasi and Colwill] playing there together, I think it makes it very difficult for Thiago Silva to get back into the team between now and the end of the season unless someone gets injured.”
The football pundit suggested that Chelsea should consider looking ahead and building for the future. He added, “There’s not an awful lot to play for after the cup final. So I think looking at those two as a partnership and maybe another younger centre-back — I’m not sure who else they’ve got in the squad — but yeah, I think the days of Thiago Silva playing for Chelsea have got to come to an end.”
Levi Colwill, primarily a left-back this season, showcased his adaptability by excelling in the central defensive role against City. At just 20 years old, Colwill could emerge as a long-term successor to Silva if the veteran’s contract, which currently stands at £110,000 per week (Spotrac), is not extended beyond the summer.
With promising talents like Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana also in the Chelsea ranks, the club may feel well-equipped to transition away from Silva. The upcoming Carabao Cup final against Liverpool could provide insight into Pochettino’s plans for Silva, determining whether the seasoned defender will play a pivotal role or if the club is ready to embrace a new defensive era.
