New Doubts for Chelsea Players
One Chelsea player is facing fresh uncertainty about his future and might push to leave Stamford Bridge, depending on certain conditions. New head coach Enzo Maresca is expected to have a significant influence on these decisions.
Players Potentially on the Move
Ian Maatsen’s Departure
Ian Maatsen has followed Thiago Silva out of Chelsea, with the highly-regarded Dutch full-back completing his medical at Aston Villa on Monday. Omari Kellyman is moving in the opposite direction as part of a separate £19 million deal. Chelsea and Villa agreed on a £35 million-plus fee for Maatsen, finalizing the terms last week. This significant fee will aid Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, in strengthening Maresca’s squad for the upcoming season.
Despite Maatsen’s impressive loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, where he helped them reach the Champions League final, Chelsea’s crowded squad left little room for him. Attention now turns to other potential departures.
Possible Exits
Several players could follow Maatsen out of Chelsea. Reports over recent months suggest Romelu Lukaku, Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher, Malang Sarr, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, Omari Hutchinson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Marc Cucurella, and Conor Gallagher might be sold this summer.
Although some reports suggest Chelsea must sell by June 30 to comply with PSR regulations, Sky Sports indicates that they have until June 30 next year. However, finding buyers for all these players will be challenging. Another player facing an uncertain future is winger Mykhailo Mudryk.
Mykhailo Mudryk’s Potential Departure
Mudryk’s Dilemma
Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke reports that Mykhailo Mudryk might push to leave Chelsea if Maresca doesn’t provide him with sufficient game time. This preseason is crucial for Mudryk, whose future is now under “new doubt.” Despite joining Chelsea in January last year for a substantial £89 million fee, Mudryk could be on the exit list.
Since his transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk, the Ukrainian star has made 58 appearances for Chelsea, scoring seven goals and providing four assists. Although he has shown glimpses of brilliance, Mudryk’s performance has been inconsistent. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard compared Mudryk to Arjen Robben, praising his footwork and speed.
Steven Gerrard’s Praise
“Mykhaylo Mudryk looks the real deal, some of his clips today were outstanding,” Gerrard said on TNT Sports. “He reminded me a little bit of Arjen Robben, his footwork, how quick he is, how he manipulates the ball. I would be very excited if I were Chelsea.”
With Enzo Maresca’s influence and the impending squad changes, the upcoming season will be critical for Mudryk and several other Chelsea players.
